Sound and Light Technician
About this position
As the Sound and Light Technician, you will be responsible for delivering expert technical support for lighting, sound, and audio-visual systems at various school events, primarily hosted in our state-of-the-art 600-seat theatre. Your attention to detail, creativity, and ability to collaborate will significantly enhance the audience’s experience.
Responsibilities
• Set up, configure, and operate lighting, sound, and AV equipment for school events such as assemblies, performances, workshops, and presentations.
• Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to lighting, sound, and AV systems to ensure seamless event operations.
• Regularly inspect, maintain, and upgrade lighting, sound, and AV equipment, including software and rigging systems. Coordinate repairs or replacements when necessary.
• Design and implement creative lighting schemes that enhance the mood, theme, and engagement of performances.
• Operate audio mixing consoles and sound equipment to ensure optimal sound quality. Adjust microphones, sound effects, and volume levels for balanced audio output.
• Provide technical support during lessons and extracurricular activities, assisting teachers and students.
• Lead special projects, including procurement, installation, testing, and ongoing equipment maintenance required for performances and other school needs.
• Ensure safety compliance during the operation of all technical equipment and educate staff and performers on safe usage practices.
• Maintain an organised inventory of lighting, sound, and AV equipment, ensuring timely replacements of cables, lamps, and other accessories in collaboration with the procurement team.
• Develop documentation and user guides for AV systems to streamline usage and training.
• Stay current on the latest advancements in lighting and sound technologies by attending workshops, conferences, and training sessions to enhance your technical skills.
• Take charge of lighting design and guide students in their lighting projects.
• Support audio-visual equipment in classrooms, performing routine maintenance and repairs as necessary, in coordination with the IT support team.
• Assist with film and video editing as required (training provided).
Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree.
• Strong proficiency in English (verbal and written).
• Flexibility and a proactive approach to challenges.
• A positive, “can-do” attitude with a creative mindset.
• Previous experience in managing events and technical setups.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Dedication to teamwork and a high level of commitment to the role.
• Previous experience working in schools is preferred but not essential.
• Willingness to work outside standard hours (7:00 am – 4:00 pm) for events and productions as needed.
